The Team Peugeot Total wins the Silk Way Rally02.08.2017

Six months after their superb triple in the Dakar, Total lubricants contributed to the victory of the #100 Peugeot DKR driven by Despres-Castera.

10 OUT OF 13

Cyril Despres and David Castera, already winners of the Silk Way Rally in 2016, doubled up when they took the flag at the finish in Xi’an after a cross-country rally run over a distance of 9333 km! The Team Peugeot Total is the benchmark in this branch of motor sport, and emerged victorious in 10 out of the 13 legs in Russia, Kazakhstan and China. Stéphane Peterhansel and Jean-Paul Cottret, winners of the Dakar in January, finished the Silk Way Rally in fifth place in the #106 Peugeot DKR. Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena who led the event for a long time were obliged to retire, but not before they had shown the full potential of the new DKR Maxi, which will race in the 2018 Dakar.

In cross-country rallies the V6 twin turbo diesel powering the DKR is subjected to extreme running conditions. The engine has exceptional torque and it reaches high running temperatures over long periods. Thus, logically speaking, reliability is the priority for the Peugeot Sport engineers. To prevent friction and wear of the components as well as helping cooling Total provides a high viscosity engine oil – Total Quartz Racing 10W50. The need for robustness requires the formulation of an extreme pressure lubricant (80W140) for the gearbox: the protection of the mobile assemblies must be guaranteed without penalising the power output.

In collaboration with their counterparts in Peugeot Sport, the Total engineers are currently developing new lubricants for the next Dakar.
