By shining bright on the circuit of the Americas, Scott Redding and Mika Kallio are back at the top of the Moto2 standings while in MotoGP Stefan Bradl has straightened things out again after his fall in Qatar.

AMERICASThe races
After crashing on the Losail circuit, Stefan Bradl redeemed himself in Texas by taking a solid fifth place enabling him to mark up his first points in the season. By outduelling Valentino Rossi after qualifying for the second row of the starting grid, the Honda LCR rider set things right again. In Moto2, Mika Kallio won his second podium in the category after a bitter fight to the finish with Aegerter and Rabat. Starting from pole position, Scott Redding completed three laps in the lead before downshifting to fifth place due to tire problems. In Moto3, Miguel Oliveira took fifth place after the race was turned into a final five-lap shootout after Jasper Iwema crashed. Efren Vazquez finished in fourteenth position.

The championship
With the eleven points won for this fifth position, Bradl has climbed back to tenth place overall in the MotoGP class. Although he only finished fifth in the Grand Prix of the Americas, Redding benefitted from Espargaro’s fall and the retirement of Nakagami to take command of the Moto2 championship. Kallio is now in second place, tying on equal points with Rabat and Aegerter. In Moto3, Oliveira and Vazquez are respectively in fifth and fourteenth position, the way they crossed the finish line of the second race of the season.

The background
For the first time in its history, this year one of the MotoGP championship events was held on the Circuit of the Americas, in Texas. “When you race on a new circuit, the first thing to do is to define the main lines for tuning the bike, the gearbox in particular,” says Christophe Bourguignon, the technical director of the LCR Honda team. To do so, before the first laps, the engineers measured every straight and every bend for their length, width, radius, and angle … Everything is analysed to establish a first base for the bike settings, both for the electronic assistance devices and to calibrate the gearbox. “This circuit is very difficult to master,” says Stefan Bradl who, like the other works riders, was given an opportunity to test the track in Austin before the opening of the championship season. “There are various problems of different kinds that take time to be properly understood, both in terms of riding or tuning the bike for the track.”
