After Bradl’s injury in Malaysia, Scott Redding broke his wrist in Australia, losing every chance of winning the world championship title.

AUSTRALThe Races
Although he was forfeit for the Malaysian Grand Prix after breaking an ankle during the practice test sessions, Stefan Bradl tried to ride his Honda on the Phillip Island circuit. But after a perilous first test session, the LCR Honda rider was forced to abandon his attempt for the weekend. “It would have been too dangerous to do otherwise and the doctors told me not to ride after examining me again at noon on Friday,” explained the German. The next day Redding fractured his wrist, putting a premature end to his Australian Grand Prix. Although he also suffered a fall during the qualifying session, Kallio was still able to defend his chances at the start of a race shortened from 26 to 19 laps amid safety concerns over tyres degrading on the new tarmac surface of the Phillip Island track. The Marc VDS driver took seventh place in the Moto2 race. Efren Vazquez crossed the finish line of the Moto3 race in the same position, Oliveira having fallen in the first lap. The Mahindra rider was able to restart, and finished the race in twenty-sixth position.

The Championship
Although he is still in seventh place in the MotoGP overall standings, Bradl is now twelve points behind Bautista. In Moto2, Redding is going to have to accept Espargaro taking control of the championship, while Kallio has confirmed his fourth place after taking one small point in Rabat. Finally in Moto3, Oliveira is still in sixth position but has lost ground to Folger after scoring no points at Phillip Island. Vazquez has not moved from ninth place.

The Background
Scott Redding will not be world champion this season. The rider of the Marc VDS team was the victim of cruel misfortune in the final minutes of the qualifying session of the Australian Grand Prix. Riding among the front runners, the championship leader broke his left wrist in a fall at the exit of bend number twelve. Redding was operated in the evening after being evacuated to Epworth Hospital in Richmond. “The surgeon inserted a plate and screws on the head of the radius,” said Michael Bartholemy, his team manager. “It is obvious he won’t be able to ride his bike, at best, before Valencia, the last race of the season.” Just when he still had a nine-point lead in the championship, with a heavy heart the British rider has had to watch Pol Espargaro pass him by without being able to defend his chances. “Our priority is Scott’s health,” reiterated the boss of the Marc VDS team. “We have to face facts, even if it’s a great disappointment for all of us, just when we were so close to victory.”
