On the Silverstone circuit Loris Baz scored his first victory of the season by winning the second race of the English weekend. Kenan Sofuoglu also won in the Supersport category.

Superbike Great-Britain

The Races
The Silverstone event took place under very “British” conditions, with scattered showers and uncertain weather that put the riders’ nerves on edge. Fifth in the first Superbike race and winner of the second, Loris Baz showcased his skills on the English circuit. Less at ease, Tom Sykes only took eleventh and seventh places. “I was thinking about the championship,” the latter explained. “Under conditions like these a mistake can be quickly made, and I didn’t want to end up with a DNF. I wasn’t riding flat out, the important thing was to finish the race and score the points.” In Supersport, Kenan Sofuoglu overtook Sam Lowes in the final bend to win his second victory in a row and his third of the season. Starting on the third line of the grid, Fabien Foret also made it to the podium by finishing third.

The Championship
Even though he finished twice behind Sylvain Guintoli, Tom Sykes limited the losses in England. The Kawasaki rider is still in second place overall at only three points behind the leader. With two good results, Loris Baz is now level on points for the fifth place with Brit rider Chaz Davies. In Supersport, Kenan Sofuoglu is hot on the heels of Sam Lowes. The Turk is only twenty-nine points from the championship leader. Third in the overall classification, Fabien Foret is thirty points behind his teammate.

The Background
Silverstone seems to be Loris Baz’ favourite circuit. In any event, he won his first success in the World Superbike Championship on the circuit last year, and the Kawasaki rider has done the same this season by winning the second race of the British weekend. Fifth in the first race, the French rider pulled out all the stops in the second to take the lead right from the start. Under extremely difficult conditions, with brief showers watering the asphalt without making it wet enough to require the switch to rain tires, Baz skilfully managed to hold off the attacks of his opponents to stay in first place until the race was red-flagged after two riders who were hot on his heels both crashed. “I’d like to dedicate this victory to Andrea Antonelli,” announced the Kawasaki rider on stepping up to the podium. “I might have done equally as well in the first race if I hadn’t ridden so cautiously. I was thinking too much, which meant I made mistakes and lost contact with the leaders. I was more relaxed for the second race and that paid off. I was under pressure right from the start but I managed to fight off each of my opponents’ attacks. This circuit seems to bring me luck, but what I really want to do now is win somewhere else before the end of the season.”
