Sofuoglu Catches Up

Winner for the fourth time in a row, Kenan Sofuoglu is now only five points from the leader of the Supersport world championship. Enough to nourish hopes of a new title…

The Races

Nothing seems capable of stopping Kenan Sofuoglu. After Assen, Imola and Donington, the Kawasaki rider won Misano a fourth time in a row, this time defeating Jules Cluzel, the only opponent having resisted the defending world champion.

I’m very happy with this win for the team, who managed the weekend perfectly, and for Kawasaki, who helped us have a super motorcycle again. I knew that Mahias had fallen, but I wasn’t prepared to settle for a place as a runner-up. I wanted to win and I did everything I needed to get it. My pace was faster than Cluzel’s and I took advantage of it.

Nineteenth on the starting grid, Kyle Smith came in fourteenth at the finish line. In Superbike, Tom Sykes won the first race of the weekend by skilfully taking advantage of the mistakes as well as the misfortunes of his opponents. First the fall of Van der Mark, then that of Melandri, and finally the error made by Davies who crashed in the last lap, taking Jonathan Rea with him. After leaving the track, the latter was able to start off again and catch up with his teammate before taking third place on the podium behind Alex Lowes. In the second race, the two Kawasaki riders lost to Marco Melandri but made it to the podium. Randy Krummenacher took seventh and eighth places.

The Championship

As Chaz Davies didn’t manage to score a single point in Italy, Jonathan Rea and Tom Sykes broke away in the overall standings. Fifty points currently separate the two Kawasaki riders, while the leader now has a hundred-and-eleven point lead over Davies. Krummenacher holds fifteenth place with forty-four points. In Supersport, Kenan Sofuoglu is only five points behind Mahias. Kyle Ryde is in eighth place, tying on points with Rolfo. Canducci, who scored no points at Misano, still holds fifteenth place in the standings.

The Background

This year again, Kawasaki were the team to beat at Misano. Winner of the last six races organized on the « Marco Simoncelli » international circuit, ridden by Tom Sykes and Jonathan Rea, the ZX-10 RR was the real threat. For once, the Greens had problems with their tyres and couldn’t score a twin-win, with Sykes winning on Saturday afternoon, and Marco Melandri on Sunday. But each Kawasaki rider made it to both podiums over the weekend. And as the contract between the managers of the Adriatic Coast circuit and the promoter of the Superbike World Championship has been extended until 2020, no doubt the ZX-10 RR will add a few more lines to its track record in Italy.

We weren’t the best performers this weekend.  We suffered on Sunday in particular when the riders found their bike didn’t behave the same as the day before. But the most important thing is that we were able to consolidate our first two places in the overall standings.
